Mario Cal Varela

Mario Cal is a lecturer in the Department of English at the University of Santiago de Compostela, where he teaches English to Spanish translation, oral skills and English for academic purposes. In October 2001 he obtained a Ph.D at the USC with a dissertation on the topic of sociolinguistic variation in Gibraltarian English. More recently, his research interests have shifted into the area of English for Academic Purposes, where he has collaborated in a project on the English needs of the research and teaching staff at the USC. He has done research into non-native versus native speech patterns in academic presentations and into interpersonal features in computer-mediated communication in academic contexts. He is directly involved in the ongoing development of the SUNCODAC corpus, a collection of student discussion forums compiled over a four-year period at the University of Santiago de Compostela. He is also interested in English language teaching and learning issues, the incorporation of ICTs into foreign language teaching in particular. Within this field, he has collaborated in the compilation of the Diccionario de enseñanza y aprendizaje de lenguas (enCLAVE-ELE/CLE International, 2007) and has taken part in a project (with the collaboration of researchers from twelve higher education institutions across Europe) to develop an online version of the European Language Portfolio (LOLIPOP, completed in September 2007). Currently, he is one of the official USC coordinators of the Multilingual Student Translation (MUST) project, coordinated by Sylviane Granger and Marie-Aude Lefer at the Université Catholique de Louvain. This is an international project which aims to collect a large multilingual student translation corpus with rich, standardized metadata that combines insights from both Learner Corpus Research and Corpus-Based Translation Studies. More than forty research teams have joined MUST since its creation.
