SIGN Ignacio Palacios has passed the national examination (‘acreditación’) qualifying him for promotion to a position as Full Professor of English.

SIGN Yolanda Joy Calvo Benzies will present a paper entitled "Was the servant hit on the head with a bowl by Mrs Jackson in the living room? Is the bag under the rug? Adapting some traditional games to the teaching of segmental and suprasegmental English pronunciation" in the XXX AESLA International Conference, which will be held at the University of Lleida from the 19th to the 21st of April, 2012.

SIGN Yolanda Joy Calvo Benzies presented a paper entitled "La enseñanza de la pronunciación del inglés en Galicia: una asignatura pendiente" in the XLI SEL (Sociedad Española de Linguística) Symposium, held at the University of Valencia from teh 31st of January to the 3rd of February, 2012.

SIGN Ignacio Palacios gave a plenary lecture entitled "Teenagers as Linguistic Innovators. A Study of British Teenagers' Language" in the  IV International Conference on English and ESP Lexicology and Lexicography held at the University of Alicante from 24th to 26th November.

SIGN Ignacio Palacios and Paloma Núñez presented a paper entitled "Strategies used by English and Spanish Teenagers to Intensify Language: A Contrastive Corpus-Based Study" in the XXXV AEDEAN annual conference held in Barcelona from 16th to 18th November.

SIGN Yolanda Joy Calvo Benzies will present the paper entitled "Students' views on the teaching of English pronunciation in Spain. A survey-based study" in the 2nd Conference of Young Researchers on Anglophone Studies (ASYRAS) to be held from 6th to 8th October, 2011 in Salamanca (Spain).

The use of the intensifiers absolutely and totally in the spoken language of British adults and teenagers" in the 44th SLE annual conference held from 8th to 11th September, 2011 in Logroño (Spain).

SIGN María Luisa Roca presented a paper entitled "False friends in everyday communication contexts" in the 44th SLE annual conference held from 8th to 11th September, 2011 in Logroño (Spain).

SIGN Mario Cal Varela has obtained a position as Tenured Senior Lecture at the University of Santiago de Compostela.

SIGN José Antonio Rodríguez Díaz presented his Ph.D dissertation entitled "Anglicismos y germanismos en el lenguaje publicitario del español peninsular contemporáneo, 1998-2007" on the 18th of July, 2011.

SIGN Francisco Javier Fernández Polo presented a paper entitled "Native and non-native speaker presenters at international conferences in English: managing interpersonal relationships and presentation resources" in the 2nd International PRISEAL Conference:Publishing and Presenting Research Internationally,Issues for Speakers of English as an Additional Language, held from the 9th to the 11th June, 2011, in Sosnowiec/Katowice (Poland). He also presented the paper "'The title of my paper is…' Introducing the topic in conference presentations" in the Genre Variation in English Academic Communication Conference, held from the 23rd to the 25th June, 2011, in Bergamo (Italy).

SIGN Alba Cachafeiro presented her paper “The use of English in the discouse of Spanish teenagers" in the 13th ELC Research Seminar held on the 27th of April 2011 at the University of Santiago de Compostela.

SIGN Mª Luisa Roca Varela presented a paper entitled “Corpora as Tools and Resources for the Teaching of English Vocabulary“ in the 3rd International Conference on Corpus Linguistics (CILC11) held in the University of Valencia from the 7th to the 9th April, 2011.

SIGN Ignacio Palacios Martínez and Alba Cachafeiro Requeijo have presented, respectively, the papers entitled "She goes like this:  urg, urg, urg; era como: fu fuf ufu fu. The Use of Quotative Markers by Spanish and English Teenagers. A Constrastive Corpus-Based Study" and "The presence of English in the Spanish teenagers' language" in the Sixth International Conference on Youth Languages "Youth Languages - Dynamics and Cultural Contexts" which took place at Freiburg University from March 31st until April 2nd, 2011.

SIGN Yolanda Joy Calvo Benzies presented her MA dissertation entitled " The teaching and learning of  the pronunciation of English in Spanish secondary schools and universities. A preliminary analysis" on the 24th of March, 2011.

SIGN Yolanda Joy Calvo Benzies presented a paper entitled "The importance given to pronunciation in EFL textbooks used in Spanish school. A preliminary study" in the XXIX Congreso de AESLA, held in Salamanca from the 4th to the 6th May, 2011.

SIGN Yolanda Joy Calvo Benzies presented a paper entitled "The teaching of English pronunciation: some useful techniques and resources" in the XXVI Congreso Internacional de la Asociación de Jóvenes Linguistas, held in Salamanca from the 9th to the 11th March, 2011.

SIGN Paula López Rúa has just published the book English Spelling for EFL Students, which forms part of the university series of handbooks published by the University of Santiago de Compostela. This manual provides both intermediate and advanced level students of English as a Foreign Language with further knolwedge and practise so as to make them improve their spelling. The book is divided into six chapters, and its contents are based on the analysis of a corpus of spelling errors spotted in exams, essays and exercises done by Spanish university students.

SIGN Paula López Rúa presented a plenary session entitled "Swingvergüenzas A Contra Blues: A Study on Creative Code Mixing in Spanish Music" in the Second Seminar on English and ESP Lexicology and Lexicography, held at the University of Alicante, from the 25th to the 27th November, 2010.

SIGN Ignacio Palacios Martínez presented a paper entitled "The Grammar of British Teenagers' Language. A Preliminary Study" in the XXXIV AEDEAN Conference, held at the University of Almería, from the 11th to the 13th November, 2010.

SIGN Yolanda Joy Calvo Benzies attended the "Summer Course in English Phonetics" held at the University College London, from the 9th to the 20th August, 2010.

SIGN Ignacio Palacios Martínez presented a paper entitled "How can we account for the new changes taking place in the system of negation in modern English?" in the XI ESSE Conference, held in Torino, from the 24th to the 28th August, 2010.

SIGN Raquel Fernández Carril presented her Ph.D dissertation entitled "English vocabulary teaching and learning in the Galician EFL context. The role and importance of vocabulary learning strategies" on the 7th of May, 2010. She was awarded the highest grade with distinction (Sobresaliente Cum Laude).

SIGN María Luisa Roca Varela presented a paper entitled "The problem of false friends in learner language: Evidence from two learner corpora" in the 2nd International Conference on Corpus Linguistics (CILC10), held at the University of A Coruña from the 13th to the 15th May, 2010.

SIGN Martiña Piñeiro de la Torre presented a paper entitled "The teaching of phrasal and phrasal prepositional verbs in the Spanish context: A case study with EFL bachillerato materials" in the XXVIII Congreso AESLA, held in Vigo from the 15th to the 17th April, 2010.

SIGN Araceli García Fuentes presented a paper entitled "Break a Leg! The Use of Drama in the Teaching of English to Young Learners. A Case Study" in the XXVIII Congreso AESLA, held in Vigo from the 15th to the 17th April 2010.

SIGN Alba Cachafeiro presented the paper entitled "Creativity and language use. An analysis of the influence of English in Spanish magazines for young women" in the 1st International CILS Conference, held at the University of Calabria (Italy) from the 14th to the 16th of December, 2009.

SIGN Luisa Roca-Varela presented her paper “A corpus-based approach to the lexical collocates of highly problematic false friends in English and Spanish” in the 10th ELC Research Seminar held on January the 22nd, 2010 at the University of Santiago de Compostela.

SIGN The three Galician universities (Santiago, Coruña and Vigo) have just published jointly in collaboration with the Xunta de Galicia a new edition in Galician of the Dictionary of Language Teaching and Learning originally published in Spanish by En Clave-Ele Internacional in 2007. This dictionary was compiled by Rosa Alonso, Mario Cal, Paula López Rúa and José Ramón Varela under the direction of Ignacio M. Palacios. It contains a detailed explanation for more than 1,000 entries directly connected with different fields of second language teaching and learning: approaches and methods, teacher training and development, curriculum and syllabus design, classroom management, language research, Psycholinguistics and Clinical linguistics applied to language teaching, language skills, techniques and activities, etc. This volume also includes several appendices providing information of interest for language teachers and a glossary with the translation of the entry terms in six different languages: Italian, Spanish, Galician, French, English and German. This work may be of interest for language teachers and students, language professionals and researchers who want to have a comprehensive reference source for ther daily work and activities.

SIGN Francisco Javier Fernández Polo participated in a panel discussion entitled "O portafolio no ensino da tradución: descripción dunha experiencia" during the Jornadas internacionales Docencia, investigación e innovación en la Universidad: Trabajar con (e) portafolios, held in Santiago de Compostela on the 23rd and 24th November, 2009.

SIGN Luisa Roca Varela presented her MA dissertation entitled A Corpus-Based Study of English False Friends in the Interlanguage of Spanish Learners on the 4th September, 2009. At the moment she is on a research visit at the University of Birmingham (UK).

SIGN Begoña Jamardo has presented the paper entitled "El lenguaje no verbal en la comunicación intercultural: utilidad en la enseñanza de inglés de negocios" at the 26th AESLA Conference, which was held at the University of Castilla la Mancha from the 26th to the 28th March, 2009. She has also taught the following seminar during 2009: COMPETENCIA EN COMUNICACIÓN LINGÜÍSTICA. IMPLICACIONS METODOLOXICAS, ASPECTOS NON VERBAIS DA COMUNICACIÓN (6 hours, 16th February to the 26th March, 2009; Centro de Formación e Recursos de Pontevedra; Conselleria de Educación, Xunta de Galicia).

SIGN Our team leader, Ignacio Palacios Martínez, presented the paper entitled "It ain't nothing to do with my school. Variation and pragmatic uses of ain't in the language of British English teenagers" in the 30th ICAME Conference, which was held at the University of Lancaster from the 27th to the 31st May, 2009.

SIGN Araceli García Fuentes presented the paper entitled "Let's talk ICTs" in the 6th International Conference of English Methodology, which was held at the University of Valladolid from the 6th to the 9th May, 2009.

SIGN Inmaculada Gigirey Liste, Martiña Piñeiro de la Torre and Mª Luisa Roca Varela presented the paper entitled "New Insights into the Teaching of Spoken Language. A typology for the classification and development of oral tasks" in the 6th Internacional Conference of English Methodology, which was held at the University of Valladolid from the 6th to the 9th May, 2009.

SIGN Last November, the member of our research team, Isabel Balteiro, was awarded the 2008 AEDEAN (Spanish Association for Anglo-American Studies) "Leocadio Martín Mingorace" for her book The Directionality of Conversion in English: a Dia-Synchronic Study (2007, Bern: Peter Lang).
